Central Mexico

OVERVIEW

Do not miss the opportunity of touring around central Mexico, visiting traditional sites like Xochimilco, the ancestral archeological city of Teotihuacán, the colonial influence in Puebla or the Convent of Acolman. This trip is complemented by the route of Mexico’s most famous revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata, the leader of the poor. Thus, this program is highly complete.

 

DETAILED PROGRAM 

DAY 01: MEXICO D.F.

Reception at the airport, assistance and private transport to the hotel.

 

DAY 02: MEXICO – MUSEUM OF THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION

Panoramic city tour around the ancient and modern streets of Mexico’s capital, like Avenida Reforma, until we reach the historical centre, where the cathedral and national palace are located. We will see the remains of the ancient Tenochtitlan (Azteca capital), as well as the palace of belle arts and other important buildings. We will then visit the Museum of Anthropology and History of Mexico, where we will visit the Maya and Azteca expositions. Finally, we will have lunch at the La Hacienda de los Morales restaurant, where we will enjoy excellent Mexican food. Transport to hotel.

At night we will visit Garibaldi, center of the Mexican music. We will go to “Guadalajara at night” restaurant, to enjoy ranchera music as well as some folkloric dances. Back to hotel.

DAY 03: MEXICO – CONVENT OF ACOLMAN & PYRAMIDS OF TEOTIHUACAN

Visit to the Viceregal Museum of Acolman, where the ex-Agustin convent of XVI century is preserved. The ex-convent was opened to the general public in 1925. In 1960, several restorations of the mural paintings and the chapels were made. The heritage consists of paintings and religious objects of the viceregal times. A historical account of the ex-convent is offered: its construction, the distribution and use of the rooms and the multiple floods it suffered due to an error in the construction, as well as the process of restoration. The religious theme is expressed in a collection of virgins. Lunch (included) at La Gruta.  Afterwards, we will visit Teotihuacan, also known as the City of the Gods. Upon arrival we will visit the main architectonic sites and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, which can be climbed. Back to the hotel.

We suggest to previously request a reservation for the national folkloric ballet or a dinner at the revolving restaurant “Bellini”, at the 50th floor of the World Trade Center.

DAY 04: MEXICO – XOCHIMILCO AND THE MUSEUM OF FRIDA KAHLO – CUERNAVACA

We will start with a panoramic tour of the city towards the southern sites. On the way we will see the Cibeles Plaza, Siqueiros Cultural Poliforum, the sport city, and the Bull-fighting Plaza, the largest in the world, where we will see the sculptures. We will also visit the Insurgentes Theatre where we will see the murals of famous Mexican artists, until we reach the University City of UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico), the largest in the world, where 10,000 students are housed. We will visit the rector’s office as well as the Olympic Stadium of Mexico 1968. Upon arrival at Xochimilco, we will board a “chalupa”, a typical boat in which we will navigate through channels while we enjoy a typical Mexican lunch (included) and famous mariachi songs. Finally, we will return to visit the Azteca Stadium, where two world football (soccer) championships have taken place. Afterwards, we will go towards the neighborhood of Coyoacan until we reach the Museum of Frida Kahlo, where her most famous works are kept and we will learn about the life of this great Mexican woman and symbol of feminism in the world. Finally, we will go to the historical hotel at Cuernavaca.

DAY 05: CUERNAVACA – THE ROUTE OF EMILIANO ZAPATA

After breakfast, we will visit the old Moctezuma hotel, which was General Zapata’s headquarters during the revolution while he was at the capital of Morelos. On the stairs of this hotel was taken the most popular photograph of Emiliano Zapata, who stands in a brave pose with his gun on the right hand.

Afterwards we will go to Cuautla. Once we arrive, we will continue towards the city of Ayala. At 6 km we will arrive at Anenecuilco, where Zapata was born in August 8 1879. Here we will visit the Zapata Museum (Tuesday to Sunday), where we will learn the enigmatic history of this town and the reasons that lead towards revolution.  We recommend you to ask for Lucino Luna, who will talk about Zapata’s life in Anenecuilco.

The third place we will go to is the town of Tlaltizapan, military center of Zapata, where we will visit the headquarters of Zapata. We will be able to see personal belongings of Zapata, a copy of the Plan of Ayala, the bedroom that the general shared with his wife Josefina Espejo, as well as the clothes he wore and the saddle he was using when he was killed. We will also be able to see objects and documentation of the revolution.

Finally, we will arrive at Chinameca, where Zapata was betrayed and shot to death on April 10 1919. We will see a statue of Zapata, as a Mexican symbol that fought for the people and still stands as an image of revolutionary Mexico. We will then go to the hotel.

DAY 06: CAVES OF CACAHUAMILPA AND TAXCO.

Transport to the famous caves of Cacahuamilpa. where we will travel, like Verne, to the center of the world. The caves are touristic and illuminated, but we will be accompanied by a guide to avoid being lost while visiting the strange rock formations. This adventure lasts 2 hours. Afterwards, we will go to Taxco. This city lies upon a mountain which has silver mines. We will visit this beautiful town where we will be able to buy silver with the guarantee of the Mexican government. We will have lunch (included) in a restaurant with and incredible view. Afterwards, we will visit the famous cathedral and go in a funicular towards the Monte Taxco Hotel, where we will have the most spectacular view of Taxco. Finally, we will go to the hotel in Cuernavaca.

DAY 07: CATHEDRAL OF CUERNAVACA – CHOLULA

After breakfast, we will visit briefly the cathedral of Cuernavaca and head towards Cholula, in the state of Puebla. We may see the left side of the Popocatepetl volcano. We will enjoy free time at Cholula.

 

DAY 08: CHOLULA – PUEBLA

We will travel to the archeological zone of Cholula, where we will visit the biggest pyramid of America. On top of this pyramid stands a beautiful church. We will also the convent of San Gabriel Arcangel, built in 1529.

Afterwards, we will visit the city of Puebla, considered by the UNESCO as Heritage of Humanity, where we will go to its cathedral, its main square and many domes decorated with mosaics. We will also visit the fabulous chapel of Rosario and finally we will return to the hotel at Cholula.

DAY 09: MEXICO

We will go from the hotel at Cholula towards the airport at Mexico city (2 hrs), where you can fly to a Mexican beach.
