Eastern Mexico

OVERVIEW

Mexico’s eastern territory is maybe the most exciting. At Veracruz one can visit the coffee plantations of Xico and Coatepec, the traditional and magical towns of Alvarado and Tacotalpa; or historical sites like the port of Veracruz, the most important of Mexico, as well as the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa. Cuernavaca, Taxco, the capital of silver; and the Museum of the famous painter Frida Kahlo will be visited.

 

DETAILED PROGRAM

 DAY 01: MEXICO

Reception at the airport, assistance and private transport to the hotel.

 

DAY 02: MEXICO, CONVENT OF ACOLMAN & TEOTIHUACAN

We will go by the modern and ancient streets of the Mexican capital, like the Reforma avenue until we arrive at the historical center where we will visit the cathedral and the national palace. We will have a panoramic view of the ancient Tenochtitlan (Azteca capital) as well as the palace of beau arts and other important buildings. We will then travel to Teotihuacan, with a previous stop at the square of the 3 cultures and the Convent of Acolman, which was declared national monument in April 6 1933 and still runs as the Museum of Colonial Art. Finally, we will have lunch (included) at La Gruta restaurant and afterwards we will visit the pyramids of Teotihuacan, maximum expression of Mexican pyramids. At night we will visit Garibaldi, where we will enjoy Mexican music. We will also go to the restaurant “Guadalajara de noche”, to enjoy ranchera music as well as folkloric dances. Back to hotel.

DAY 03: CUERNAVACA & TAXCO

We will take the highway towards Cuernavaca where we will visit the cathedral and its baptismal font. Then we will continue to Taxco, known as “the silver city”, built above a mountain with narrow streets which wind between white houses. We will visit the church “Santa Prisca”. There will be free time for shopping. Afterwards, a funicular will take us up to mount Taxco, from where we will have the best panoramic view of the city. Finally, we will return to Mexico.

DAY 04: XOCHIMILCO & MUSEUM OF FRIDA KAHLO

We will take a panoramic tour by the modern streets until we reach the bull ring (the largest in the world) and the theatre Insurgentes, where we will enjoy paintings and murals. Then we will go to the university campus (UNAM) and finally Xochimilco, also known as the “Venice of America” due to its aquatic canals, through which we will sail in a traditional “trajinera”. Afterwards, we will make a brief stop at Coyoacan, where we will visit Frida Kahlo’s house. Finally, we will return back to the hotel.

DAY 05: CHOLULA & PUEBLA

We will travel 2 hours up to the archeological area of Cholula, where we will visit the biggest pyramid of America. On top of its peak stands a beautiful church. At Cholula we will visit the convent of San Gabriel Arcangel, built in 1529. We will continue towards Puebla, declared by the UNESCO “World Heritage”, where we will visit its Cathedral and its main square with its numerous churches. We will also visit the Chapel “del Rosario” and in the afternoon we will go back to the hotel at Mexico.

We recommend to previously book a reservation for the National Folkloric Ballet or a dinner at the restaurant “Bellini”, on the 50th floor of the World Trade Center.

DAY 06: CHOLULA  – VERACRUZ – SAN JUAN DE ULUA

Early in the morning we will go towards Veracruz, after a 3 hour trip, to visit Mexico’s most important harbor and the entrance for many foreign armies like Napoleon’s and the United States. After lodging in a hotel, we will visit the fortress San Juan de Ulua, where many great events of Mexican history took place: the colony, the independence, the reform, and the revolution. We will continue for a panoramic tour of the historic downtown to visit the buildings of the sea customs, telegraphs, railways, Zócalo, Santiago, until we reach the city of Boca del Rio, where modernity and tradition merge. Finally, free afternoon to walk by the peers or visit the aquarium.

DAY 07: XALAPA – CASCADE OF TEXOLO – COFFEE PLANTATIONS OF XICO – COATEPEC

We will travel to Xalapa, capital of state, culture and arts, of Veracruz. We will visit the ex-estate Lencero, surrounded by beautiful gardens, a lake and coffee plantations. Then we will go to the historic downtown, the Palace of Government, the Cathedral, the park Benito Juarez, university campus, and Paseo de los Lagos. Afterwards we will go to the town of Xico, which is surrounded by green hills and mountains, coffee plantations, which we will take us to the cascade of Texolo, a beauty of nature. We will end this trip by visiting the magic town of Coatepec, known for being the producer of the best coffee plantation at high altitudes. We will have the opportunity to know about the process and tasting of different types of coffee, as well as going to the plantations, depending on the seasons (Oct-Nov-Dec-Jan- and part of Feb). Finally, we will return to the port of Veracruz.

DAY 08: ALVARADO – TLACOTALPAN – VERACRUZ

Today we will visit the port of Alvarado, known for the happiness of its people, as well as its gastronomy, festivities, and traditions. We will walk by the river Papaloapan until we reach to Tlacotalpan, considered a World Heritage by UNESCO, birthplace of the folklore of Veracruz. We will walk through its streets to enjoy the simple but colorful architecture. As we walk we will see that the people make an art of their lifes: the women dance and embroil, men carve wood and play instruments and improvise songs.  If visited on the first week of February it is possible to enjoy the festivity of “candelaria”. Finally, we will return to the port of Veracruz.

DAY 09: VERACRUZ

Transport to the airport of Veracruz.
