Tour to Peru: Salkantay Alternative Trek – Khapac Ñan

ABOUT THE SALKANTAY TREK

One of the best routes leading to the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu is the trail known as the Salcantay Inca route.  This remote path leads us through an amazing variety of landscapes and habitats varying from green, reach valleys full of blossoming forests and trees of different species to highland fields and glacial moraines flanked by steep rocky and icy peaks of impressive beauty.  During our trip we have to cross a high pass below the spectacular glaciers of the Humantay (5,917m – 19,414ft) and Salcantay (6,270m -20,572ft.).  From our last camp site we will enjoy an amazing trekking down to the shores of the Salkantay River and from there by train we will be transported to the small town of Aguas Calientes for a well deserved rest in a comfortable hotel. Next day we will enjoy a full day tour to visit the amazing “Lost City” of the Incas: The fabulous Machu Picchu.

DAY 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAYPAMPA – HUAYRACMACHAY  (6 Hours.)

05:00 a.m. private transport from the city of Cusco and passing the localities of Izcuchaca and Limatambo after 04 hours trip will arrive to Mollepata (2,800 m.a.s.l) where pax who desire will have breakfast at their own and then continue to Soraypampa (3,900 m.a.s.l).  Here will be prepared and ready to continue with us the mules and a horse of chair for any contingency.  From this point we start our 6 hours trek towards the high pass of the Salkantay (4800 m.a.s.l.)  We have our first Lunch of the trip in the sector named Salkantaypampa (3,000 m.a.s.l) and later we continue with our trek until arrival to Huayracmachay (4,000 aprox. m.a.s.l), place of our first camping.  Tea time and then dinner.  Overnight

DAY 2: HUAYRACMACHAY  -  HUIÑAY POQO. (9 Hours.)

After a good breakfast, at 06:00 a.m. we prepare to continue our 9 hours trek, leaving at 07:00 a.m. we will cross the whole Collpapampa´s Valley.  Observing an impressive upper jungle flora.  By 12.00 m. we will have our Lunch and after it, will continue with the trekking, appreciating in our way formations of rivers that then turn into tributaries of the Rio Urubamba.  In this section will have the opportunity to observe diverse varieties of flowers, plants, vines, shrubs, trees, wild typical grasses, herbs of the zone and a fall of great magnitude.  Arrival to the site of our second camping, a small community in a subtropical area. named Huiñay Poqo Camping (2,500 m.a.s.l).  Tea time.  Dinner and over night

DAY 3: HUIÑAY POQO – LA PLAYA – HIDROELÉCTRICA – AGUAS CALIENTES  (3 Hours.)

Continuing our tour and after a comforting breakfast, by 06.00 am, we continue this day with a 3 hours trek up to the place called La Playa, a typical hamlet of the zone, where it is possible to appreciate plantations of coffee, fruits as the passion fruit and the avocado trees.  At La Playa or Cochapampa (2,300 m.a.s.l) we will aboard a local truck  and go towards “La Oroya” where we will arrive in 1 hour.  “La Oroya” (a Cable Basquet transportation) is an original way to cross the waters of the Urubamba River at this point (according to tourists opinion, this is an inexperienced event never tried before).  Once passed “La Oroya”, we aboard another local truck transport service from La Oroya towards Hidroelectrica.  Here we will aboard the local train to Aguas Calientes (2,000 m.a.s.l) and after 1 hour 30 minutes we will arrive to the town of Aguas Calientes.   Basic hostel accommodation.

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

Early in the morning by 06:00 a.m. tourist bus transport from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the Machu Picchu (2,400 m.a.s.l)  City and after it, we will initiate the guided visit to this marvelous place.  Lunch

In the afternoon we will take the public bus to Aguas Calientes and return by train up to Cusco’s train station. Transfer from the station to your hotel in Cusco
