Tour to Chile: Myths and Legends in the Chiloe Island

OVERVIEW

Chiloe invites us to visit its churches (XVIII – XIX) made of wood, archetypes of the Chilota school of wooden religious architecture, from which 16 have been declared heritages; to visit the chilotes riding in boats by channels and islands; to visit the farms, its cities, its beautiful landscapes, but above all, to meet the people.

 

DETAILED PROGRAM

DAY 01: PUERTO MONTT OR PUERTO VARAS – ANCUD

Excursion to Ancud.  At Pargua we aboard a boat to travel for 30 minutes to Chacao, after crossing the channel that bears the same name, until we reach Ancud. Transport to hotel.

In the afternoon, tour around the city, to visit San Antonio fortress, the beach of Arena Gruesa and the viewpoint of mount Huaihuén.  After that, a visit to the market, the fair of crafts and the fishermen’s dock. Finally, a visit to the Regional Museum, where you will learn about the culture, history and traditions of Chiloe. Back to hotel.

 

DAY 02: ANCUD – DALCAHUE – ACHAO – CASTRO – ANCUD

Excursion towards the bay of Calcahue, where we will visit a church declared by the ONU a world heritage. Afterwards, we board a ferry towards the island of Quinchao. During the travel we will visit towns like Curaco de Velez and Achao and to the church Santa Maria, the oldest in the archipelago.  We will then go to the city of Castro, capital of the province.  Typical lunch included.  Tour around the city to look at the houses built by fishermen. Then a visit to the museum of modern art and the peninsula Ten-Ten, the San Francisco Church and finally the crafts market. Trip back to Ancud.

DAY 03: ANCUD – AHUI FORTRESS – PINGUINERAS – PUERTO MONTT OR PUERTO VARAS

In the morning, excursion by the bay of Ancud until we reach the bridge Quilo, where we will visit a private archeological museum. Then, trip to fortress Ahui, built by the Spaniards in 1779. Typical lunch in Quetalmahue and a visit to Peñihuil, wher we can look at some penguins from Humboldt and Magellanes. Back to Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas.
