Western Mexico

OVERVIEW

Guadalajara is located at Mexico’s western territory. This great city houses the town of Tequila and the plantations of Maguey, where the worldwide known beverage tequila is produced. The program also includes the rare ruins of Guachimontones and the traditional town of Tlaquepaque. The tour continues at the Mexican capital, with previous stops at Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Querétaro, and Tepotzotlan.

 

DETAILED PROGRAM

DAY 01: GUADALAJARA

Reception at the airport, assistance and private transport to the hotel.

 

DAY 02: TEQUILA EXPRESS TRAIN

This day we will go to the train station where we will board the Tequila Express train. We will be received with mariachi music and once we are in the train we will taste a margarita, beverage prepared with tequila. The mariachis will keep on playing during the trip, while we travel by the Jalisco plain. We will arrive at a tequila estate where we will learn about the process of tequila production, from its harvesting to its bottling, in old and legendary wineries as well as in modern high-technology wineries. Afterwards, we will have lunch, with tequila tasting and accompanied by mariachi music and dances. Finally, after shopping, we will go back to Guadalajara, arriving at your hotel in the afternoon.

DAY 03: GUADALAJARA & TLAQUEPAQUE

We will visit the oldest areas of Guadalajara, where we will be able to see the most representative buildings, churches, and monuments of the Historical Center. We will learn about the foundation of this beautiful city and learn about the architecture of the XVI and XVII century constructions, as well as the squares that surround the Metropolitan Cathedral. We will also see the Government Palace (the Murals of Orozco), the Main Square, the Cathedral, the Municipal Palace, the Regional Museum, and the “Liberación” Square, the Circular Plaza of the Distinguished “Jaliscienses”, the “Degollado” Theatre, the “Tapatía” Square, the Cultural Institute “Cabañas” (Murals of Orozco) and the “Libertad” Market. Once we finish these visits, we will go to Tlaquepaque and Tonala. These city councils form the Mexican artisanal representatives worldwide. We will visit the locations of some famous artists, their galleries, as well as their workshops and factories, which are a paradise for shopping. Some products you can buy are blown glass, paper mache, ceramics, plant pots, forged iron, carved wood, etc. Finally, we will return to the hotel.

DAY 04: TEUCHITLAN & GUACHIMONTONES

We will travel towards the most important archeological zone of the state of Jalisco, which dates back to pre-classic times and which flourished between the II and IV centuries. The ruins of Guachimontones are located at the slopes of the Tequila volcano which offer, together with the de la Vega reservoir, a beautiful landscape. This archeological site is different from every known context of Mexican pyramids due to the circular form and the rings. We will continue our trip towards the Teuchitlan house of culture, a typical town where the Museum of the Guachimontones is also located. We will see a video about this interesting culture and afterwards we will go to the Ancient Factory of Obsidiana. Finally, there will be time for lunch (not included) and then we will return to Guadalajara.

DAY 05: GUADALAJARA – GUANAJUATO

We will travel to the beautiful city of Guanajuato. There will be a free afternoon to walk around the city, the most Spanish in Mexico.

DAY 06: GUANAJUATO – SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

We begin the historic route of the Mexican independence. First, we will visit the town “Dolores Hidalgo”, where the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started the battle for the independence of Mexico. Among other places, we will visit the Parish Dolores and the House of priest Hidalgo. We will continue to Atotonilco, where we will find his sanctuary of XVIII century and where he beheld the symbol of the independence on September 16 1810. This temple is considered the Mexican Sistine Chapel. Finally, we will head towards San Miguel de Allende, where we will visit the house of Ignacio Allende, another hero of the independence who became the first Mexican emperor after the defeat of the Spanish. This city also has a beautiful gothic-style cathedral. Then we will go to the hotel in San Miguel de Allende.

DAY 07: SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE – QUERETARO – TEPOTZOTLAN – MEXICO

We will leave San Miguel for a 2 hour trip towards Queretaro. Once the first capital (before Mexico city) will allow us to enjoy its beauty, like the aqueduct from colonial times. We will then go to Mexico, stopping at Tepotzotlan for a delicious lunch (included). We will also visit the temple, now the National Viceregal Museum, which used to be the Jesuit School of Francisco Javier. We will see the biggest jewelry of the baroque-colonial architecture, the splendid façade carved in green quarry and its incredible altarpieces carved in stone and covered by 20k gold. Finally, we will return to the hotel.

DAY 08: MEXICO – CONVENT OF ACOLMAN & TEOTIHUACAN

We will go by the modern and ancient streets of the Mexican capital, like the Reforma avenue until we arrive at the historical center where we will visit the cathedral and the national palace. We will have a panoramic view of the ancient Tenochtitlan (Azteca capital) as well as the palace of beau arts and other important buildings. We will then travel to Teotihuacan, with a previous stop at the square of the 3 cultures and the Convent of Acolman, which was declared national monument in April 6 1933 and still runs as the Museum of Colonial Art. Finally, we will have lunch (included) at La Gruta restaurant and afterwards we will visit the pyramids of Teotihuacan, maximum expression of Mexican pyramids.

DAY 09: MEXICO

Transport to the airport.
